So, we started the kelt steelhead reconditioning program. This is a bit redundant from Bill’s presentation before lunch, but I’m going to focus on the scenarios in the blue box. The four management scenarios that we are evaluating include: 1. Direct release; this is basically a control group. We collect kelt steelhead at a juvenile by-pass facility near Prosser Dam, PIT tag every 5th fish and release them back into the river. 2. No-term; these kelts are captured near Prosser Dam located on the Yakima River and then trucked and released below Bonneville Dam on the Columbia. We outfit all of these fish with PIT tags and many of them with acoustic tags. We generally pair these releases with the next scenario 3. Short-term; kelt steelhead subjected to this treatment are captured at Prosser Dam and then held and fed in 20’ circular tanks for about 6 weeks. The fish are then PIT and acoustic tagged and trucked and released below Bonneville Dam. 4. Long-term; in this treatment kelts are collected, held in 20’ circular tanks for about 8months and fed. The fish are released in the late fall during the steelhead migration in the Yakima River.
