Some early efforts to use ESRI's Internet Map Server 9.0 to present EPA's sampling of fish around the Columbia Basin in 1996 and 1997. For Background see: EPA Region 10 site: Columbia River Basin Fish Contaminant Survey
All use an IMS Image service.
The most basic is the HTML viewer version. No viewer is needed other than your browser, so no download is needed. - HTML Viewer version
A more fully featured version uses the IMS Java viewer. The first time you point your browser at the site, the application checks to see if you have the required plug in and, if not, starts the download and installation of ArcExplorer and a plug-in for your browser. Follow the on-line instructions. Works with I.E., Netscape 7.x, and Mozilla. Some report that they had to restart Internet Explorer to get it to work. Allows for the download of selected records to a common delimited file. - Java Viewer version
A more featured version uses the IMS Java custom viewer. This viewer only works with Internet Explorer because it is a Java 2 application. Allows for more customization - Java Custom Viewer version
Here's a new version of the contamination map (December 2004) that uses a true color satellite mosaic as the terrain backdrop. It uses the Java Viewer as well. Let me know if your redraw times are too excessive with this satellite image - Java Viewer, satellite image
I put one of the EPA Fish contamination tables into a MySQL database on my web host to demonstrate the capability of this approach for sharing data tables among collaborators. You can see this table with MyAdmin at http://contam.ykfp.org. User name OHSU and password catostomus gets you read only access to the table. Full access gives you the ability to edit the table and add new lines.
Microsoft Access can link to these MySQL tables live on the web with freeware ODBC drivers, giving users a more familiar interface to work with the data tables. See http://ykfp.org/ODBC/ for more, just use in this case database name contam and user name OHSU, password catostomus.
